Chicken and Some Imported Foods

Fatwa No. ( 3317 )
Q: We ask Allah, then your Eminence, to clarify the ruling on imported chicken, cheese of the type (Kraft), and canned and imported meats and fats. We have heard that some types of soap, such as (Camay) and (Lux), are made from pork fat. Is it permissible to wash with them and trade in them? Many people are confused between those who affirm and those who deny; some say: If there were any prohibition in them, they would not have entered the Islamic lands.
A: The default ruling regarding the slaughter of Muslims and the People of the Book is that it is lawful, until
What establishes that it takes them out of that and into prohibition, and the fact that the People of the Book, namely the Jews and the Christians, have distorted their books or worshipped other than Allah, does not take them out of being People of the Book today, just as it did not take them out of that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Qur'an was being revealed. For Allah the Exalted named them People of the Book and permitted us to eat their slaughtered animals in Surat al-Ma'idah, which mentioned their distortion of their books, their disobedience to their Lord, and their cursing of Him by saying: (Allah's hand is chained), and their disbelief in Him and His Messenger, and their worship of other than Allah, and the saying of the Christians: (That Allah is the third of three), and their saying: (The Messiah is the son of Mary, the son of Allah), and the saying of the Jews: (Uzair is the son of Allah). And that did not take them out of being People of the Book in the time of the revelation of the Qur'an, so it does not take them out of that today. And the original ruling regarding benefits is permissibility, whether they are manufactured, such as cheese, soap, sweets, and ghee, or not manufactured, until evidence is established that takes them out of that. And the reports about what is imported of slaughtered animals and manufactured goods to the Kingdom from the lands of the disbelievers have always been varied and inconsistent, to the extent that His Excellency the Minister of Trade in the Saudi Kingdom has continued to strongly deny what is circulated about the meats and canned goods imported to the Kingdom, that they were slaughtered in a non-Islamic manner, and that Kraft cheese and the like of what is imported to the Kingdom
are mixed with pork fat or carrion, which would render them forbidden. Therefore, these rumors are not sufficient to move the imported goods from the default ruling of permissibility to prohibition. However, imported meats from communist countries and the like, from those who are neither Muslims nor People of the Book, are forbidden, because their slaughtered animals are carrion. Nevertheless, whoever has doubt about these imported goods should leave them off as a precaution, acting on the hadith: "Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt." And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
