Treatment of diabetes from a pig-derived substance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 3681 )
Q: Diabetes is one of the widely prevalent diseases, resulting from a deficiency in the secretion of insulin from the pancreas. The discovery of the possibility of extracting insulin from calves and injecting it into diabetic patients had a major impact on treating millions of those afflicted with this ailment,
which is considered a significant event and a prominent milestone in the development of modern medicine. In recent years, new types of insulin extracted from pigs have been discovered, which are distinguished by being purer of impurities and can be administered in smaller doses to patients who have immunity or sensitivity to insulin extracted from calves, among other advantages. It is regrettable that such pure types of insulin have not yet been extracted from calves, although practical experiments are still ongoing to achieve this. Is the use of such types of insulin extracted from pigs forbidden or not? It is known that they are taken in the form of injections, not orally, and were extracted through complex chemical methods, which is not a place to explain here.

A: The use of types of insulin extracted from pigs is forbidden; because of the established evidence indicating the prohibition of treating with forbidden things, and that Allah has not made healing in forbidden things. Among what is established in this regard is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawfulعباد الله تداووا ولا تتداووا بحرام
Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani)
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
