Q: One day, I was sitting, and my neighbor was visiting me. I had my young son with us. Then, I got up to see my neighbor off. The child slipped away from us and headed toward a container of water in which I was washing clothes in the restroom. I was careful to lock the restroom door to protect my son from playing with the water, but this time I forgot to close the door. When I went looking for him, I found him face down in the basin where I was washing the clothes. He had passed away, and praise be to Allah for His decree and destiny. My question is: I feel deep regret and sadness, and I feel that I was the cause of his death. Do you think I was the cause of his death? And do you think there is anything required of me in this matter?
There is no blame on you, and no expiation is required for the death of your son from falling into the container used for washing clothes; because it has not been established that you caused his fall and death. Placing such a container in the restroom is a common custom, and the presumption is that one’s conscience is clear until the contrary is proven. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
