The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20339 )
Q1: What is the ruling on using alcohol in food and beverages?
A1: If what is mixed with alcohol becomes intoxicating when consumed in large quantities, then it is not permissible to use a small or large amount of it for eating, drinking, perfuming, or medical treatment; because Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:90-91]
And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): , narrated by the Imam Ahmad, and Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi, . And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has decreed that intoxicants are an abomination and commanded their avoidance, so they must be destroyed; because keeping and holding them is a means to their use, and because when the prohibition of intoxicants was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to be poured out, so they were poured out in the markets of Madinah. As for what is mixed with alcohol and does not become intoxicating even in large quantities, there is no harm in using it; because it is not intoxicant. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q1: What is the ruling on using alcohol in food and beverages?
A1: If what is mixed with alcohol becomes intoxicating when consumed in large quantities, then it is not permissible to use a small or large amount of it for eating, drinking, perfuming, or medical treatment; because Allah the Exalted said:
(90) O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. (91) Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?
And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, a small amount of it is forbidden
Seek treatment, O servants of Allah, but do not seek treatment with that which is forbidden, for Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down for it a cure
