The second question of Fatwa No. ( 18457 )
Q2: In the markets, vinegar is available, which is used in many Muslim households. Upon contacting the manufacturing companies, it was revealed that the original substance is alcohol, but certain ingredients are added to it, causing it to transform into vinegar; that is, it changed from one state to another. Some people permit this (vinegar) because it has moved from the degree of alcohol to becoming vinegar. What is the legal ruling on this?
A2: If intoxicants are converted into vinegar, they remain forbidden, and their removal does not change their ruling; this is based on what is in (Sahih Muslim) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him),
the Prophet was asked about wine which was turned into vinegar* and forbade itأن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - سئل عن الخمر تتخذ خلاًّ، فقال: لا
Mishkat al-Masabih 3641
. However, if it turns into vinegar on its own without anyone’s intervention, it becomes pure and permissible thereby. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
