Q: I present to you this problem of mine, which is that I unintentionally caused a fire in our house, and my mother burned to death in this fire . It has been about twenty years since this fire and the death of my mother, and from that time until this moment, my conscience has been tormenting me and I have been preoccupied with this situation that happened unintentionally. Will I be held accountable for a sin, or should I fast or give charity so that I may die with a peaceful mind? I have been having a very disturbing dream for a long time, in which I see a camel chasing me, wanting to devour me, and this dream keeps recurring to me continuously. Therefore, I ask your permission to issue a fatwa on this matter so that my heart may be at ease regarding my mother who burned to death, and whether I will be sinful in this regard? May Allah preserve you.
A: If you were negligent and caused this fire, as a result of which your mother passed away, it is obligatory for you to pay the blood money (diyah) to your mother's heirs, and you must perform the expiation for accidental killing, which is freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do so, you must fast for two consecutive months, which is sixty days.
