Q: I havebeen afflicted with an incident, namely the accidental killing of a member of my group, as Allah knows, during our public performance on the day of the festival. His heirs have waived both retaliation and blood money, and they have pardoned me without any condition or restriction, knowing the friendship between us. My question now is: Is it possible to free a slave, and can this be done through your Eminence? I do not possess the full amount at this time, but after I am released from prison, I will receive my dues from the job I was working in and pay the value of the slave. Or should I switch to fasting two consecutive months, and would that clear my conscience? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you, may Allah guide you and keep your steps steady, and peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A: If the matter is as mentioned, it is obligatory upon you to pay the expiation for accidental killing;
because you caused the death of the aforementioned person from your group, and it is: freeing a believing slave, whether you find its value now or in the future. If that becomes difficult, it is obligatory upon you to fast two consecutive months. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
