The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20463 )
Q1: I am a young man who was involved in an accident in which I struck a person, and he subsequently passed away to the mercy of Allah, if Allah wills, due to an error. I have an uncle who works as a teaching assistant in the College of Education, and he has a colleague who is the head of one of the departments in the college and the head of the Islamic Relief Authority in the area where I live. He informed us that he knows a doctor at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh in the College of Dawah. He spoke well of him, his trustworthiness, and his truthfulness. This doctor, who works at the university, told us that he would help us with this matter for the sake of Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, and that he would take the required amount for manumission, which is ten thousand Saudi riyals, and send it to another person in Mauritania whom he trusts to perform the manumission. I deposited the required amount into his bank account because he is very far from me. Then, to further ensure this doctor's trustworthiness, I asked another reliable person about him, and he confirmed that he is a trustworthy person worthy of
keeping a trust and preserving it. The question is: Is this slave released from my liability?
A1: If it is established for you that slaves exist, and you manumit a believing slave as expiation for yourself, whether you manumit it yourself or through one of your Muslim brothers in whom you trust, your liability is cleared by that, and praise be to Allah. Know that the expiation for accidental killing is the manumission of a believing slave. If you do not find one, then fasting two consecutive months is required in the case of inability to manumit, and there is no feeding involved.
