Q: I had contracted marriage with a woman, but I had not entered into conjugal relations with her. I went out with a friend of mine, and we passed by a grocery store and stopped there to buy some items we needed. My friend wanted to get out of the car to buy them himself, so I said to him: “May I be divorced,” and I did not complete my sentence; because I had forgotten that I had contracted marriage. I remembered during my speech and did not complete my sentence. My friend did not get out of the car; rather, I got out and bought what we needed, and we left. Is there anything upon me for what I did? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: If the matter is as you described, then no divorce takes place regarding your wife; because you did not complete the utterance of the divorce, and you did not pronounce the divorce in full, and your friend did not get out of the car, but rather you got out. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
