Fatwa number ( 2418 )
Q: He plays volleyball, and one day he got angry and swore an oath regarding his family, meaning he said: "By the forbidden, I will not play this game inside the center anymore, and I am afraid I might play it. What is the ruling if I play it?"
A: First: Engaging in this game and similar ones is not recommended, and it is better for the Muslim to focus on what benefits him in his religion and his worldly life. Second: If the situation is as you described, then if you continue to refrain from playing, which is better for you, you owe nothing, and this does not affect your relationship with your wife. However, if you return to playing, you must pay the expiation for an oath, which is feeding ten poor people, giving each of them a full meal from the middle of what you usually eat. If you give each of them half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of their land, that is sufficient. Or you may clothe them or free a slave. If you cannot find the means to do so, fast for three days, and it is better for them to be consecutive; because Allah the Exalted said:
[At-Tahrim 66:1-2] And He the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:89] And you must repent of that, because it is not permissible for a Muslim to swear by the forbidden. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

(1) O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (2) Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths
