Fatwa number ( 17153 )
Q: Please inform us according to the Shari'ah: 1 - Is it permissible for the wife's mother to meet her daughter's husband with her head uncovered? 2 - Is it permissible for her to meet him while wearing short clothes that end just below the knee? 3 - Is it permissible for her to kiss him as if he were her son? 4 - Is it permissible for her to embrace him against her chest? Please inform us; may Allah reward you and benefit the Muslims with your knowledge. Amen.
A: The wife's mother is a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to her daughter's husband, so it is permissible for him to see of his wife's mother what a man may see of his mahrams, such as the face, the hands, the neck, the hair, and the like. As for a woman kissing her daughter's husband and embracing him against her chest, this is an abomination and is not permissible; because this is not done except with a husband, and because of the fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) to be feared in it.
It is permissible for him to kiss her on the head, as there is no harm in that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
