Fatwa number ( 8134 )
Q: II have a wife who is the mother of four children, the eldest of whom is six years old, and the youngest is an infant who is also pregnant at the same time. This woman is afflicted with a nervous condition and severe mental insanity, which has led her to adopt a habit of cursing. Then it came from her that she cursed me, my parents, and my children. So I required her to fast for three days, give charity, and repent, and I boycotted her, but she did not abandon this bad habit. Every time she fell ill, she would curse and quarrel, and she does not realize that it is forbidden, no matter how much I advise and guide her. I am suffering hardship from this woman, but I have endured it because of the circumstances of the young children, but I am in doubt
in that. So I ask Allah, then you, to guide me regarding this woman and this trial, and what I am required to do?
A: We advise you and your children and others with you to treat her with kindness, and not to be rude to her or provoke her feelings. You should admonish her with wisdom and good instruction, and repel her evil words with what is better. You should make it clear to her that cursing is among the major sins, and that its evil returns to the one who curses if the one cursed does not deserve it; perhaps Allah will guide her and help her to abandon cursing and other wrongs. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
