Playing at Celebrations and Women Dancing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 5067 )
Q: Is it permissible to play at wedding celebrations and for women to dance in a place far from the men, and for men to play in a place far from the women, each separately, or is it not?

A: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged announcing the marriage so that it would be a distinction between it and fornication. However, this announcement is to be done with what is permissible of testimony, and by women beating the hand drum, and by their singing in a manner that is not lewd, contains no fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), and involves no free mixing of men and women. It is also to be done by inviting people to the wedding feast and by men playing with spears and the like, which serves as training for jihad in the path of Allah, provided they are separate. As for announcing the marriage with what is not permissible in the Shari'ah; such as men beating the hand drum, men or women dancing, performing plays, or using instruments of amusement; such as musical devices and all other musical instruments, that is not permissible, even if the men and women are each separate. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
