Fatwa No. ( 15956 )
Q: What is the ruling on clapping for women when they are at a celebration (wedding) or a graduation ceremony from summer centers or something in which Allah and His Messenger are mentioned? The reason for this question is that I went to a hall in Jeddah and found the person in charge of the event, which was a graduation for a summer center for the Noble Qur'an, ordering them to clap at the end of each segment. I objected to that, and she came to me and said: What is your evidence for that? I said to her: The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And their prayer at the House was not except whistlingوَمَا كَانَ صَلاتُهُمْ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ إِلا مُكَاءً
[Al-Anfal 8:35]
She replied to me and said: I have researched a lot in the books and I did not find evidence for the prohibition of clapping. She said to me: Ask His Eminence the Shaykh Ibn Baz ; his answer contains evidence for objecting to clapping. Here I am presenting the question before you, so I hope you will graciously answer my question in a personal letter, sealed by you; because I want to present it to this female doctor in charge.

A: It is prescribed for men and women when hearing or seeing what pleases them or what
is disapproved of: to say tasbih and takbir without clapping, following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); because when he saw something he liked or heard something he liked, he would say: "Subhan Allah" (Glory be to Allah), or "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), and likewise when he saw or heard what is disapproved of. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
