The first question of Fatwa number ( 20053 )
Q1: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 5185, 5186 .
Woman was created from a rib" — agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. The Shaykh \ Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut , in his verification and commentary on the book (Riyad al-Salihin) by Imam al-Nawawi under this hadith, commenting on this hadith by saying: (The discussion here is on likening and comparison, as is explicitly stated in the second narration: ; not that the woman was created from Adam's rib as some imagine, and there is nothing of that in the authentic Sunnah). Your Eminence: This is what Shaykh al-Arna'ut said word for word, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says word for word and with complete clarity: Sahih Muslim 1467b And the proof of this, I think, is in the saying of Allah the Exalted: [An-Nisa 4:1] , and in His saying: [Al-A'raf 7:189] , and in His saying: [Ar-Rum 30:21] , and in His saying: [An-Nahl 16:72] , and the people of tafsir said: It means: women, for Hawwa was created from Adam's rib (peace be upon him). Your Eminence: Is what Shaykh al-Arna'ut said correct or incorrect? And what is your guidance regarding the hadith he cited as evidence: Sahih al-Bukhari 5184
Answer us, may you be rewarded .
A1: The apparent meaning of the hadith is that the woman — and the one meant is Hawwa (peace be upon her) — was created from the rib of Adam , and this does not contradict the other hadith in which the woman is likened to a rib; rather, the point of the likeness is derived from this, namely that she is crooked like it, because her origin is from it. The meaning is: The woman was created from a crooked rib; so do not deny her crookedness. If the husband intends to straighten her and prevent her crookedness, it will lead to discord and separation, which is like breaking her. But if he is patient with her bad state, her weak intellect, and the like of her crookedness, the matter will continue and the marriage will last, as the explainers of the hadith clarified, among them al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in (al-Fath) (6 \ 368), may Allah have mercy on them all. And with this it becomes clear that denying the creation of Hawwa from the rib of Adam is incorrect.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
