Q: We have a widespread tribal custom in al-Hijaz , and this custom is: when a member of the tribe marries his daughter to a young man from one of the neighboring villages, he asks the groom to bring
at least twelve sheep from the flock, and when the father of the bride is asked about it, he mentions that these sheep will be slaughtered as a meal for his group. The question, O honorable Shaykh: Is this custom permissible in the Shari'ah of Allah, or is it forbidden?
A: It is recommended to hold a wedding feast on the occasion of marriage without extravagance; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the one getting married: As for extravagance in feasts on the occasion of marriage or otherwise, it is forbidden; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-A'raf 7:31] and due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Isra 17:26-27] and because extravagance in the wedding feast burdens the husband and makes marriage difficult, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged lightening the cost of marriage, so it is obligatory for you to abandon this custom and restrict yourselves to what is prescribed, and in that is good and blessing. And if a custom contradicts the Shari'ah, it must be abandoned; because of the evil in it.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
