Q: It has spread among the youth traveling abroad to marry with the intention of divorce, where the marriage is the purpose of the travel based on a fatwa on this matter, and many people have misunderstood the fatwa, so what
is the ruling on this?
A: Marriage with the intention of divorce is temporary marriage, and temporary marriage is invalid; because it is mut'ah, and mut'ah is forbidden by consensus. The valid marriage is: that one marries with the intention of maintaining the marital bond and continuing in it. If the wife is suitable for him and compatible with him, he keeps her; otherwise, he divorces her. Allah the Exalted said: /403 L2 L229 L229 /403 “Then either keep them with kindness or let them go with kindness.” And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
The eighteenth volume of the Fatwas of the Permanent Committee has been completed – with the praise of Allah alone – and the nineteenth volume follows – by His permission – beginning with (Defects in Marriage).
