Q1: Is greeting a brother's wife forbidden or permissible, and is it permissible to be alone with a brother's wife, and what is the ruling on that?
A1: A brother's wife is not among the mahram (relatives one may not marry) of her husband's brother, so it is not permissible for him to shake her hand, nor is it permissible for him to be alone with her. The basis for this is what the Imams Ahmad and al-Bukhari narrated from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir , that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1171Sahih (Darussalam) , and the meaning of His saying: "al-ham" is said to be the husband's brother. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
