Exchanging bracelets for smaller ones while paying the difference in value
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18387 )
Q1: Some of my relatives bought gold bracelets, and after returning home, it became clear to us that they were too large. The next day, I returned them to the shop owner and asked him to exchange them for smaller ones. The shop owner took them, asked for the purchase invoice, weighed them, and gave me smaller ones along with the difference. My intention was to exchange them, as is customary when buying clothes or anything else. Your Eminence: Is this transaction considered riba? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.
A1: If what you mentioned is of the nature of canceling the contract and returning the bracelets that did not fit the person for whom they were bought, and then buying smaller ones for less than the price of the first ones, there is no harm in that, and it is not of the nature of riba. However, if what you mentioned is of the nature of exchanging the first bracelets
for smaller ones while paying the difference in value, then this is riba; because it is selling gold for gold with an increase in dirhams.
