Working for those who rent out apartments in which evil is committed
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20539 )
Q: I work as an employee in furnished apartments and rooms, and I see what angers Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and I remain silent about it, sometimes out of fear of quarrels, and sometimes out of weakness of spirit. In these apartments and others, sodomy, drinking intoxicants, gambling, and unlawful sexual intercourse take place. The most common are drinking intoxicants and taking narcotics. The employer does not object to or oppose anyone who commits these forbidden acts, to the extent that I am ashamed of myself when I pray, because the person comes to me and I know he is a dealer in alcohol, and I cannot say to him: there are no rooms available. Even if I were to report them, the police do not do anything to prevent them from committing these forbidden acts. Therefore, I ask you, may Allah reward you, to kindly issue a fatwa to me in this matter: Is the salary I receive for this work or from this job lawful or forbidden? And what is the solution for a situation like mine? Knowing that if I stand up and ask my employer for leave, he refuses, and if he gives me leave, he will deprive me of my rights, because he holds back three months' salary with him. May Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not permissible for you to work for those who rent out furnished rooms and apartments
that are used for sins and the commission of evil; because this is cooperation in sin and aggression, and the wage you receive in exchange for that is forbidden for you; because it is in exchange for forbidden work. So seek your livelihood through permissible means, and in the lawful there is sufficiency from the forbidden. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:[At-Talaq 65:2-3] May Allah make your affair easy and the affair of every Muslim.
