Authorizing the bank to collect the due amount
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 15518 )
Q: I am a man who receives a salary from one of the government institutions, which requires me to go to this institution every month. It is located 35 km from me, and my health—since I am advanced in age—does not allow me to travel and endure the queues, especially the long salary queue, from which the smell of smoke emanates, which bothers me greatly. I have a heart condition and cannot bear it. When I complained to the officials, they advised me to bring an account number from any bank to have the salary transferred to it. This requires me to pay the bank (five dinars) for the account number. I am a man who has lived my whole life being scrupulous about dealing with any bank. Is it permissible for me to pay these dinars to obtain an account number in this bank? Knowing that we have a bank called the Islamic Bank.
A: Authorizing the bank or any other party to collect your due from the institution in exchange for a fixed amount they take for their fees is permissible; due to the hardship you mentioned in going to collect it, the benefit is mutual, and there is
nothing that prevents this in the Shari'ah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
