The third question of Fatwa No. ( 14212 )
Q3: A person appointed me as his agent to sell a damaged car for
two thousand or more, so I agreed to that. After that, another person came to me, and I sold him the car for two thousand and eight hundred riyals (2800). When the original owner of the car arrived, I told him: I sold the car for two thousand riyals, and I kept the eight hundred riyals (800) for my own account without informing him of that. What is the ruling on that? Knowing that I do not know that person, nor his name, nor his country. Should I give the amount in charity on his behalf? May Allah guide you to what is in the interest of Islam and the Muslims.
A3: You did wrong by informing the car owner of something other than the reality, and this is lying and betrayal. You must repent, seek forgiveness, and return the remaining amount of the value to the car owner. If it is difficult for you to identify him, then give it in charity to the poor with the intention that it is on behalf of its owner. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
