Fatwa number ( 5524 )
Q: I had shares in a company, and this company went bankrupt 25 years ago. There were trustees for the company who bought shares in the Bank of Riyadh with the remaining amount 25 years ago, at a price of one thousand riyals per share. Now the price of one share is 30,000 riyals, and I am in need of this amount. Is it permissible for me to take the current value of the share? Knowing that
their purchase of the Bank of Riyadh shares was made without our knowledge throughout this period .
A : Take the entire amount, both the principal and the interest, then hold onto the principal; because it is your property. Give the interest in charity to causes of good; because it is riba (usury or interest). May Allah enrich you from His bounty and compensate you with something better than it, and assist you in fulfilling your need. Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, He is sufficient for him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
