Getting Rid of Usurious Money
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: His Eminence the Shaykh / Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him).
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
Your Eminence: I have a problem, and I would like to know the opinion of the religion regarding it. It is this: About twenty years ago, my father lent the sum of 2,000 riyals to two of his friends, 1,000 riyals to each, on the condition that the amount be returned after one year, with an increase of 500 riyals on every 1,000 riyals. My father was poor and had gathered this amount after much effort and hardship. Then my father passed away before he could recover his money, so my mother recovered it. One of the men paid the amount without the increase, while the other paid the usurious increase. This happened when I was young, in elementary school, and I was unable to direct my mother to the fact that this act is forbidden. Since that time, I have suffered the greatest pain because of my fear for my father regarding this act. I know that my father was uneducated, and I do not know if he knew that what he did was forbidden or not. I ask Allah, then you, to guide me to what I should do so that I may atone for my father’s sin.
Also, what should I do regarding the usury that my mother took when our family’s debt was repaid, even though she may have known that this amount was usury, but she too was uneducated? Please inform me what I should do, and as quickly as possible. May Allah reward you with all good.
Answer: And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
You must return the increase, which is five hundred, to its owner; because it is usury. And you should pray for your father for forgiveness and pardon. May Allah bless you.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
