Q5: What is the ruling on a woman being a merchant, whether she is traveling or resident?
A5: The original ruling is the permissibility of earning and trading for both men and women, whether traveling or resident; due to the generality of His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:275]Bulugh al-Maram 7:1 , and because it is established that women in the early period of Islam used to sell and buy with modesty and caution regarding displaying their adornment. However, if a woman’s trade exposes her to revealing the adornment that Allah has forbidden her from
revealing, such as the face, or if she travels without a mahram, or if she mixes with foreign men in a way that she fears fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) from—then it is not permissible for her to engage in it; rather, it is obligatory to prevent her; because she is engaging in a forbidden matter in the path of obtaining a permissible one.

وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَاThe Prophet (ﷺ) was asked, 'What type of earning is best?' He replied, "A man's work with his hand and every transaction which is free from cheating or deception."
وقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم لما سئل: أي الكسب أطيب؟ قال: عمل الرجل بيده، وكل بيع مبرورrevealing, such as the face, or if she travels without a mahram, or if she mixes with foreign men in a way that she fears fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) from—then it is not permissible for her to engage in it; rather, it is obligatory to prevent her; because she is engaging in a forbidden matter in the path of obtaining a permissible one.
