The questioner : We know from the Noble Qur'an that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, created seven heavens in layers and of the earth, the like of them. But I want to know from you what is the distance between each heaven? And is there a thickness for each heaven? Please inform us of this, may you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : The answer to this is that the heavens, as the questioner mentioned, are seven. Allah the Exalted made them layers and placed distances between them. This is indicated by the hadith of the Mi'raj, which is established in the two Sahihs and others, that Jibril (peace be upon him) ascended with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from one heaven to another, knocking at the door of each heaven upon entering, until he reached the seventh heaven. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached a place where he heard the scraping of the pens and arrived at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. Likewise, the earths are seven, as indicated by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Talaq 65:12] The likeness here is not in attribute, for that is known by necessity, but it is a likeness in number. This is supported by what is established in the two Sahihs in the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 12:2048 This indicates that the earths are also aligned, with one beneath the other. As for the distance between each heaven and the next, a hadith was reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the distance between one heaven and another is a journey of five hundred years, and that the thickness of each heaven is a journey of five hundred years. And knowledge is with Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
