The Kunyah, the Laqab, and the Shuhrah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second and fourth questions of Fatwa No. ( 3205 )
Q2: What is a kunyah, what is a laqab, and what is a shuhrah?
A2: The kunyah: is what is prefixed with "Abu" (father of) or "Umm" (mother of), such as Abu Muhammad, Abu Ali, Umm Muhammad, or Umm Ali, for example. The laqab: is what indicates praise or blame, such as "Zayn al-Abidin" (the adornment of the worshippers) or "Anf al-Na'ah" (the camel's nose). The shuhrah: is what a person becomes known by due to the frequent
use of it upon him, whether it is a name, a kunyah, or a laqab.
Q4: Is it permissible to address someone as "the youngest son," because the eldest son died at a young age?
A4: It is better: that a person be given a kunyah based on his eldest son, whether the son is alive or dead, and he be addressed by that kunyah. However, if someone gives him a kunyah based on his youngest son and addresses him by it, there is no sin upon him, whether his eldest son is alive or dead. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
