The questioner : I have been in the workforce for years with great effort but without any benefit, and finally I thought to work in a job that would benefit me, and this job requires a document to prove competence. I do not have a document, and after severe hardship, I took my brother’s document and changed it to my name, and I obtained this job. Please advise us, may Allah reward you. Is there a sin on me for this job? And what is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view regarding this job of mine?

The Shaykh : The answer is that this is a forbidden act because it combines lying and consuming wealth unlawfully, indeed lying and betrayal and consuming wealth unlawfully. As for it being a lie, it is because you forged it and made the name yours when it belongs to someone else. As for it being betrayal, it is because you betrayed the owner of this job, who does not permit working in it except with the certificate that you forged. As for it being consuming wealth unlawfully, it is because you used this job to consume wealth that is not lawful for you, considering the reality of your situation, because the reality of your situation is that you do not deserve this wealth due to not reaching the rank that qualifies you for it. It is obligatory for you at that time to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and to leave this job and to look for a job that is suitable for your situation and the rank you are at. Otherwise, be assured that you will consume what you consume from this job as haram illicit gain, and you will be sinful thereby. Do not take lightly the consumption of haram, for the consumption of haram may prevent a person from having their supplication answered, as established in the authentic hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is Good and accepts nothing but what is good, and indeed, Allah commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, so He said: O messengers, eat from the good things and do good, for I am Knowing of what you do. And He said: O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him you worship. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the man who lengthens his journey, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands to the sky: O my Lord, O my Lord, while his clothing is haram, his food is haram, and he is nourished with haram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
How then will it be answered? فأنى يستجاب لذلك؟!
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) considered it unlikely that this man’s supplication would be answered, even though he did the things that are causes for supplication to be answered. This is a severe warning and a great caution against consuming wealth unlawfully. We ask Allah for safety for us and for you.

The questioner : O Allah, amen.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, esteemed Shaykh.
