Fatwa number ( 2489 )
Q: I inform you that, with all praise and grace belonging to Allah, I have sought knowledge for thirty years, in both Makkah and al-Madinah and Riyadh and al-Azhar Mosque in Egypt , under the hands of the distinguished scholars of this noble land, among them: the late Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Turkī, and Shaykh Hamad al-Harbi, and Shaykh Rashid Ahmad , the director of the Salafi Institute of Sciences, and Shaykh Abu Bakr Jaber al-Jaza'iri in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , and Shaykh Yusuf al-Malāḥī in Riyadh , and Shaykh Muhammad Abu Zahrah at al-Azhar, and others in
the Qur'an and its sciences, and in hadith and its terminology, and in fiqh and its principles, and in tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and in fara'id (the law of inheritance shares), and in the Arabic language, rhetoric, and da'wah (calling others to Islam) to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). All of this is in addition to the formal education from primary to secondary school at the Riyadh Scientific Institute, then the College of Shari'ah in Riyadh, from which I graduated in 1389 AH. I currently work as the principal of an intermediate school in the land of Banu Shahr. Recently, a circular was issued by the Minister of Education, attached to a letter from the Minister of Hajj and Endowments, stating the request for the assistance of religious science teachers in the Ministry of Education schools to perform the duty of leading the prayer in mosques and delivering sermons in the congregational mosques throughout the Kingdom. Since I have a strong desire to participate in this good work, and indeed I have already taken steps to facilitate this through voluntary assumption of the duty, given the above and the fact that I have been missing my right arm since birth by divine creation, as shown in my file, I would like to seek your legal opinion on leading the prayer for one who is missing an arm, as I have described my condition?

A: If the reality is as you described regarding your study of the Qur'an and the Shari'ah sciences, then you may lead the people in prayer, and indeed your leading them is better, if you are the one who recites the Qur'an to them and teaches them the matters of prayer; for the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The people should be lead by the one who is most well-Versed in recitation of the Book of Allahيؤم القوم أقرؤهم لكتاب الله
Sunan Ibn Majah 980Sahih (Darussalam)
, and there is no effect from your missing your right arm
by divine creation, or by aggression against you, or by its being cut off due to an illness, for example. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
