Deducting taxes from zakah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of fatwa number ( 7551 )
Q1: Many people here in Egypt do not pay zakah on the grounds that the state collects taxes in its place. Is that sufficient for them? Especially since the state does not collect zakah from the people. If that is not sufficient for them, do they pay it themselves, or how do they pay it?
A1: The government’s imposition of taxes on its people does not exempt those who possess the nisab of zakah and have held it for a lunar year from paying zakah. It is obligatory for them to pay zakah and distribute it in its lawful categories, which Allah mentioned in His saying:[At-Tawbah 9:60] the verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
