Fatwa No. ( 962 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed the documents sent by the Deputy Minister of Justice for Judicial Affairs, accompanying his letter No. 134/1/Q dated 1/2/1395 AH, to the
Honorable Head of the Departments of Scientific Research and Ifta, Da'wah, and Guidance, which was referred to them by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with No. 203/2 dated 11/2/1395 AH. The subject is the request of the Finance Director of Abha for an answer regarding how to estimate the value of coffee and its legal quantity for zakat, and whether it is distributed to the poor like grains and dates or not?
After the Committee studied the question, it wrote the following answer: Coffee is a type of grain that is weighed and stored, so zakat becomes obligatory on it when it reaches five wasqs, and the wasq is sixty sa' by the Prophet's sa'. The time for estimating it is when the grain becomes hard. The obligatory amount is one-tenth for what is watered without expense, such as by rain, floods, or what drinks through its roots, and half of one-tenth for what is watered with effort, such as by water wheels, camels, or machines. If it is watered by one method for half the year and by the other for the other half, then three-quarters of one-tenth is due. As for the evidence for the obligation of one-tenth for what is watered without expense and half of that for what is watered with expense, it is what al-Bukhari narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1483 . As for the obligation of three-quarters of one-tenth, it is because if either condition existed for the entire year, its requirement would be obligatory, so if it exists for half the year, half of it is obligatory. The obligatory amount is distributed in the
channels of zakat like other grains and fruits. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

On a land irrigated by rain water or by natural water channels or if the land is wet due to a near by water channel Ushr (i.e. one-tenth) is compulsory (as Zakat); and on the land irrigated by the well, half of an Ushr (i.e. one-twentieth) is compulsory (as Zakat on the yield of the land).
