Feeding the Inable in Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2772 )
Q: I ask your Eminence about feeding the inable in Ramadan , such as the elderly man and the elderly woman who are unable due to old age, then the sick person who will not recover, and then the pregnant woman and the nursing woman whose milk dries up for her child if she fasts.
A: First: One who is unable to fast Ramadan due to old age, such as an old man or an old woman, or for whom fasting is extremely difficult, is granted a dispensation to break the fast, and it is obligatory for him to feed one poor person for every day, half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, or the like of what his family eats. Likewise, the sick person who is unable to fast or for whom it is extremely difficult and whose recovery is not expected, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacityلاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
and His saying:
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficultyوَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
and His saying:
And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor personوَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ
[Al-Baqarah 2:184]
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
A dispensation was revealed for the old man and the old woman who are unable to fast, that they should break the fast and feed one poor person for every day.نزلت رخصة في الكبير والمرأة الكبيرة وهما لا يطيقان الصيام أن يفطرا ويطعما عن كل يوم مسكينًا
End of quote. And the sick person
who is unable to fast or for whom it is extremely difficult and whose recovery is not expected, his ruling is the same as that of the old man who is not able to fast. Second: As for the pregnant woman who fears harm to herself or her fetus from fasting, and the nursing woman who fears harm to herself or her infant from fasting, it is only obligatory for them to make up the days they broke their fast, like the sick person whose recovery is expected if he breaks his fast. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
