The second question of Fatwa No. ( 3594 )
Q2: A man saw the crescent of Ramadan in his country and began fasting, then he traveled to another country and the 28th of Ramadan entered upon him, and the people of that country saw the crescent of Shawwal. Does he pray the festival with them even though his fasting period is 28 days?
A2: The criterion for beginning the fast of Ramadan is the sighting of the crescent in its rising direction on the day he was in his country, and the same applies to breaking the fast, where the sighting of the crescent of Shawwal in the country to which he traveled is considered. Accordingly, he must break his fast and pray the festival with those in the country where the crescent of Shawwal was sighted, as he is among them, and he must make up the days missing from his fast until what he has fasted amounts to twenty-nine days; because the month is sometimes 29 days and sometimes 30 days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
