Zakah on Sugar Cane

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 4903 )
Q: We ask your eminence about the zakah on sugar cane; is there a legal ruling regarding it? If so, what is the prescribed rate, and what is the refutation of those who say: there is no zakah on sugar cane because it is not from that which grows from the earth? There is another issue: do we pay the zakah while it is in its plant state, or from its market price?
A: There is no zakah on sugar cane produced by agriculture; rather, zakah becomes obligatory on its price if he sells it and a lunar year passes over the price, and it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) by itself or by adding it to his other zakatable wealth, whether cash or trade goods. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
