Innovations Concerning the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 9774 )
Q: In our days, it has become widespread for groups of people to move the dead from their graves after months or years, claiming that the deceased appeared to one of them in a dream and told him that they must build a shrine for him. While moving the body from the grave to the shrine, some claim that the deceased is the one guiding them while they carry him to the places he wants to visit before his final burial, and that the deceased flies. This is in addition to other superstitions, knowing that this deceased person may not have prayed, fasted, or performed the rites of Islam during his lifetime. I ask you to inform me of the religious ruling on this matter.
A: First: Moving a dead person from his grave to another grave in which he is to be buried is not permissible,
except for a dire necessity that requires it according to the Shari'ah. Second: What was mentioned regarding the dream is not of that nature, but rather it is a dream from Satan. Likewise, the claim that the deceased is the one guiding them to specific places he wants to visit before being buried again in the grave he desires, and that he flies while being carried to those places, is a false claim, contrary to the cosmic Sunnah of Allah, and it is not a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person), but rather it is manipulation by those carrying the deceased. Third: Building domes over graves is an abomination that must not be done, and what is found of it must be demolished; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade building over graves and ordered that what is raised of them be leveled. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
