Ruling on taking a fee for reciting the Qur'an over the dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In his third inquiry, the brother Ahmad Hasan Zaid from Yemen says: There are people among us who recite the Qur'an over the dead and take a fee for it. Do the dead benefit from it in any way? And when one of them dies, they recite the Qur'an over him for three days and prepare slaughtered animals and feasts. Is this part of the Shari'ah?
Answer: This is a religious innovation (bid'ah); reciting over the dead and taking a fee is a religious innovation (bid'ah) and is not permissible. The fee is not permissible, and he has no right to recite over the dead. There is nothing that indicates they benefit from it; rather, this is what is wrong (munkar) and a religious innovation (bid'ah). Likewise, the slaughtered animals and food: the fact that the deceased's relatives prepare food and slaughter is all what is wrong (munkar) and a religious innovation (bid'ah), and it is not permissible. Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) , the noble Companion, said:
We considered gathering with the family of the deceased and preparing food after the burial to be wailing.كنا نعد الاجتماع إلى أهل الميت وصنعة الطعام بعد الدفن من النياحة
, and wailing is forbidden, as is well known.
The point is that this is among the innovations, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. It was not the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor of the Companions that when a person died, they would recite the Qur'an for him or over him, or slaughter animals, or hold mourning gatherings, food, and parties. All of this is reprehensible. This is after the time of the righteous predecessors (Salaf). Therefore, it is obligatory to be cautious of this, and it is obligatory to warn people against it. This is the duty of the scholars and the rulers: to restrain people from what Allah has forbidden and to take hold of the ignorant and the foolish until they are straight on the sound path that Allah has prescribed for His servants. By doing so, conditions will be rectified, societies will be rectified, the rule of Islam will become apparent, and the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance (jahiliyyah) will disappear. Yes.
