The first and second questions from Fatwa number ( 1333 )
Q1: Is it permissible to recite al-Fatihah or any part of the Qur'an for the deceased when visiting his grave, and does that benefit him?
A1: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to visit the graves and make du'a' for the dead with supplications he taught his Companions, and they learned them from him. Among them is:Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam) . It is not established from him that he recited a surah from the Qur'an or verses from it for the dead, despite the frequency of his visits to their graves. Had that been prescribed, he would have done it and explained it to his Companions, out of desire for reward, mercy for the Ummah, and fulfillment of the obligation of conveying the message. For he is described by the Exalted in His saying: [At-Tawbah 9:128] . The fact that he did not do so, despite the presence of the reasons for it, indicates that it is not prescribed. His Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) knew this and followed his example, contenting themselves with taking a lesson and making du'a' for the dead when visiting them. It is not established from them that they recited the Qur'an for the dead, so reciting it for them is an invented religious innovation. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sahih Muslim 1718a agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
