Question:
A listener from Iraq sent a question, saying: I am the listener, Nishwan Abdul Hamid, from Iraq, Nineveh. I hope for an answer to these questions. May Allah reward you with good. When I visit the graves, I find some people reciting the Qur'an at the graves of their deceased. Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an at the grave, or not?

Answer:
It is not permissible to recite at his grave, and there is no evidence for it. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Make some of your prayer in your houses, and do not make them into graves, for Satan flees from the house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recitedاجعلوا من صلاتكم في بيوتكم، ولا تتخذوها قبورًا، فإن الشيطان يفر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة
This indicates that graves are not to be made into prayer places, mosques, or places for recitation. Rather, the believer greets them, saying:
Peace be upon you, abode of a people of believers, and we, if Allah wills, are to follow you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone before and those who come afterالسلام عليكم دار قوم مؤمنين، وإنا -إن شاء الله- بكم لاحقون، نسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية، يرحم اللهه المستقدمين منا والمستأخرين
,
O Allah, forgive them and have mercy on themاللهم اغفر لهم وارحمهم
Sunan ad-Darimi 8:3
Thus he greets them:
Peace be upon you, inhabitants of the dwellings who are of the community of the believersالسلام عليكم دار قوم مؤمنين
Sunan Abi Dawud 3237Sahih (Al-Albani)
Or he says:
Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam)
And he prays for them for forgiveness and mercy. This is what is prescribed.
As for coming with recitation at the graves, or sitting there for prayer, or making it a place for supplication, thinking that supplication there is better than elsewhere, or closer to being answered, this is an error. Rather, he prays for them only and then departs. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
