The second question of Fatwa No. ( 1375 )
Q2: Is it permissible for a traveler to perform the obligatory prayer in a car, train, or airplane, or on a four-legged animal, when there is fear for one's self or property? And does one pray in whatever direction these vehicles are facing, or is it necessary to face the qiblah always and continuously, or only at the beginning? If the answer is yes to what was mentioned, and there is no fear, and the car stops in some places for a very short time, such that if the traveling passenger goes to perform the obligatory prayer, the car might leave and he would be exposed to harm; either from loss of money or otherwise .
A2
If the rider of a car, train, airplane, or four-legged animal fears for his life if he gets down to perform the obligatory prayer, and he knows that if he delays it until he reaches a place where he can pray, its time will have passed, then he prays to the best of his ability; due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
[Al-Baqarah 2:286] And His saying: [At-Taghabun 64:16] And His saying: [Al-Hajj 22:78] As for whether he prays in whatever direction these vehicles face, or whether it is necessary to face the qiblah always and continuously, or only at the beginning, this depends on his ability. If he is able to face the qiblah for the entire prayer, he must do so; because it is a condition for the validity of the obligatory prayer in travel and residence. If he is not able to do so for the entire prayer, let him fear Allah as much as he can, based on the aforementioned evidence. This is all regarding the obligatory prayer. As for the voluntary prayer, its matter is broader; it is permissible for the Muslim to pray on these mentioned vehicles wherever they face, even if he is able to get down at some times; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform voluntary prayers on his mount in whatever direction he was facing. However, it is better to face the qiblah when beginning the prayer, if he is able to do so in the voluntary prayer while traveling. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
