Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, from his questions, says in this question: We heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said that:
A single rider is a devil, and a pair of riders are a pair of devils, but three are a company of riders.الراكب شيطان، والراكبان شيطانان، والثلاثة ركب
Sunan Abi Dawud 2607Hasan (Al-Albani)
Tell us how authentic this hadith is, and what is its explanation? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The hadith is authentic and there is no harm in it. It indicates the prohibition of traveling alone, or with only one companion, and that travel should be with three or more. One should not travel alone, nor with only one companion, if that is feasible. If one is compelled to do so, there is no blame on him. This is based on the saying of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He):
while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelledوَقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُمْ مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا مَا اضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ
[Al-An'am: 119]. Yes.
