Q14: Regarding the prayer for seeking guidance for a certain job, a certain need, or anything else; is it required that I memorize the supplication reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (the supplication for seeking guidance), or is it permissible to read it from a book only after performing the prayer? Then, after I perform the prayer, how do I know or feel that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is guiding me to do that thing or to leave it? I ask for clarification, O our noble Shaykh.
A14: If you memorize the supplication for seeking guidance and read it from a book, the matter is broad in that regard. You must strive to bring your heart to presence and be humble before Allah, and be sincere in your supplication. It is prescribed after that that you consult
someone you trust among those who are sincere and experienced. Whenever your heart opens up to one of the two matters, that is the sign that Allah has chosen that thing for you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
