Fatwa number ( 7332 )
Q: We know, O Shaykh, that I reside in a land of disbelief, which is Italy , and the Lord has decreed that I stay there for a period of time, and this is the condition of the Muslims. I found there a mosque where the Friday prayer is performed, but the five daily prayers are not, due to the circumstance that it is not recognized by the state; this is because Italy has the Vatican , which is the head of the Christians in the world. The point is, when I entered the mosque for the Friday prayer, I found the imam saying, when he rises from the bowing in the prayer: "Our Lord, to You is praise." This was strange to me; because he says it aloud instead of "Allah hears the one who praises Him." So I said to him: I have prayed many times behind Muslim scholars, and they used to say when rising from the bowing: "Allah hears the one who praises Him." So where did you get this from? He said to me: It is a sunnah, and he mentioned the hadith:
Whoever revives a sunnah, he will have its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrectionمن أحيا سنة فله أجرها وأجر من عمل بها إلى يوم القيامة
. I said to him: It is not a sunnah; because if it were a sunnah, I would have heard it from the people of the Sunnah, especially since Allah has granted me the performance of the obligatory Hajj, and I left from Italy and returned to it in the year 1980, and I read in some books and did not find that. He said to me: I read it in (Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim) , hadith number 296, page number 84. So I looked at the hadith with him and I said to him: I did not understand from the hadith that it is among the supplications in the prayer. For example, the hadiths before it say
so. He said: No, and he insisted on that, and I learned afterwards that he follows the thought of a person in Egypt , whom they believe to be the expected Mahdi, and he is the one who prays in this manner. And indeed, I have seen many young Muslims behind this thought. So I said to him: The one who decides between us is one of the scholars of the Muslims. So we agreed to send to your Eminence, so I hope you will clarify this matter as soon as possible; because doubt has occurred among many Muslims regarding the validity of the prayer behind this imam, and is it permissible to pray behind him if it is true that this did not come from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and what is the validity of this statement, and is it a bid'ah (religious innovation) or a sunnah as he claims? So I hope you will clarify that in detail so that we may be reassured about the prayer behind him, since most of the Muslims here consult him about many things regarding Islam, and we are here without a source for rulings, not even books exist except a few that the Muslim among us cannot refer to.

A: The hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
when God’s Messenger raised his head after bowing he said, “O God, our Lord, to Thee be the praise in all the heavens and all the earthكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا رفع رأسه من الركوع قال: ربنا لك الحمد ملء السماوات والأرض
Mishkat al-Masabih 876
. The mentioned hadith is in (Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim) , and what is meant by it is: the dhikr (remembrance of Allah) after rising from the bowing and after the imam says: "Allah hears the one who praises Him." And there is a hadith in the two Sahihs from
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
when God’s Messenger got up to pray he would say the takbir when standing, then say the takbir when bowing, then say, “God listens to him who praises Him” when coming to an erect position after bowing, then say while standing, “To Thee, our Lord, be the praise,”كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا قام إلى الصلاة يكبر حين يقوم ثم يكبر حين يركع ثم يقول: سمع الله لمن حمده حين يرفع صلبه من الركعة، ثم يقول - وهو قائم -: ربنا ولك الحمد
Mishkat al-Masabih 799
. The hadith is in (Mukhtasar Muslim) under number 274 on page 78. So this hadith clarifies that what is meant in the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri is saying: "Our Lord, to You is praise," after he says: "Allah hears the one who praises Him." And from this it becomes clear that saying: "Our Lord, to You is praise," when rising from the bowing instead of: "Allah hears the one who praises Him" - is a bid'ah (religious innovation), and a distortion of the adhkar (remembrances) in the prayer from their places. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his companions.
