Teaching Music

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 7802 )
Q2: The schools here in Kuwait teach boys and girls from the fourth grade up to the age of fourteen: music, drawing, and sports for the girls. These subjects are considered mandatory in education here. We have repeatedly tried to explain the Islamic ruling on these matters to the authorities and to some of the parents, but there is a lack of clarity and a deficiency in understanding regarding this topic. Therefore, we ask for the explanation of the Islamic ruling, clarifying the matter of teaching such subjects and the responsibility of everyone who works to establish them, so that the benefit may reach all Muslims.
A2: It is not permissible to teach music, nor to learn it, nor to make images
of living beings. It is also not permissible for boys and girls to mix in all stages of education; for in that lies great danger, great corruption, and a contradiction of the texts indicating the prohibition of instruments of amusement, the depiction of living beings, and the mixing of the two sexes. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
