The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2768 )
Q1: A man makes a profession of music and earns his livelihood from it, such as in radio bands, for example. What is the ruling of Allah?
A1 : It is not permissible for a Muslim to make a profession of music, and the earnings he obtains are forbidden. He should make a profession of a trade whose earnings are pure, because it is among the instruments of amusement that are forbidden, as indicated by the Book and the Sunnah. For example, Allah the Exalted said:
And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridiculeوَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا
[Luqman 31:6]
This verse, and the scholars of knowledge interpreted "amusing talk" as taking up instruments of amusement. And because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful.ليكونن من أمتي أقوام يستحلون الحر والحرير والخمر والمعازف
Sahih al-Bukhari 5590
This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari, and musical instruments include: music and other instruments of amusement. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
