The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner : He says:The questioner : I have a shop lease, and the man who, meaning the lessor who has the shop lease with me, came to me before the lease term was due and said: Pay the rent and deduct five hundred riyals from it. Is that permissible?

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : He says: I have a shop lease, and the man who has the shop lease with me came to me before the lease term was due and said: Pay the rent and deduct five hundred riyals from it. Is that permissible?

The Shaykh : Yes, this man says that he rented a shop or a house for five thousand, and during the year the owner of the house or shop said: Give me four thousand and I will reduce it by one thousand riyals. Is that permissible or not? The answer is that this is permissible and there is no harm in it, because there is benefit for both parties. What is the benefit for the lessee? Answer, everyone? The reduction. And the benefit for the lessor is the advance and early payment. Likewise, if a person has deferred installments amounting, for example, to one hundred thousand deferred over ten years, ten thousand each year, and the creditor says: Give me five thousand now in cash and I will waive the rest, is that permissible or not? This is permissible according to the stronger position, because there is benefit for both parties in this, and there is no riba (usury or interest) in it, but rather there is a reduction, which is the opposite of riba. Yes.
