The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 1319 )
Q: 1- What is a mosque in language and in the Shari'ah?
A: 1: In language, a mosque is a place of prostration. In the Shari'ah, it is anything prepared for Muslims to perform the five obligatory prayers in congregation. The term may also be used in a broader sense, including what a person sets up in his home to perform voluntary prayers or to perform an obligatory prayer when a legal impediment prevents him from performing it in congregation in the mosque where the people establish the congregation. Among the evidence for this is what al-Bukhari and others narrated from Jabir , who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me. -1. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month's journey. -2. The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due.أعطيت خمسا لم يعطهن أحد قبلي: نصرت بالرعب مسيرة شهر، وجعلت لي الأرض مسجدًا وطهورًا فأيما رجل من أمتي أدركته الصلاة فليصل..
