Q: About Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih al-Bukhari 4479, [Sahih al-Bukhari ], Volume 2, Chapter [Al-Baqarah 2:58], verse p. 643. Muhammad, may Allah preserve him , stated in his book [Stories of the Qur'an], Part 2, page 17: that it is understood from the narration of al-Bukhari that the Children of Israel crawl on their buttocks, but this is not the walking of the arrogant in a widespread and reasonable manner in the world, but rather their likeness is a joke for people. So the correct interpretation is that of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud , who said: ("Indeed, the Children of Israel walk with joy and arrogance, raising their heads when they entered the land, and their buttocks move and their chests lean to the right and left, just as the arrogant walk"), as stated in [Stories of the Qur'an] by Muhammad, may Allah preserve him . So what do you see in this chapter: is the interpretation of al-Bukhari correct, or the interpretation of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud ? Speak on this matter with the Qur'an and the Sunnah. May Allah reward you for us and for all the Muslims with a good reward.
A: Allah the Exalted commanded the Children of Israel to enter the gate of Bayt al-Maqdis humbly, giving thanks to Him the Exalted, and to say: "Our Lord, remove our sins from us, a complete removal"
- meaning: forgive our sins with a complete forgiveness - and He promised them, if they obeyed His command, that He would forgive their sins and expiate their evil deeds. But they did not obey His command; rather, they changed what they were commanded to say and do. So they entered crawling on their buttocks, saying: "A grain in a hair" or "in a barley grain," mocking the command of Allah the Exalted, and ridiculing, mocking, and altering His legislation in word and deed, instead of obeying Him and submitting to His commands in gratitude for His blessings. So He sent down upon those who wronged among them His wrath and made them taste His punishment, a just recompense for their alteration and distortion of His law and their rebellion against it, as came in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interpreting the two verses:[Al-Baqarah 2:58-59], and its interpretation by what came in the hadith is the correct one; because it is from the infallible Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And their action - in addition to being mockery and ridicule - included rebellion against Allah and arrogance in His obedience. And by this, the error of interpreting the verse merely as arrogance and vanity is known. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q: About Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
It was said to the children of Israel, 'Enter the gate (of the town), prostrate (in humility) and say: Hittatun (i.e. repentance) i.e. O Allah! Forgive our sins.' But they entered by dragging themselves on their buttocks, so they did something different (from what they had been ordered to do) and said, 'Hittatun,' but added, "A grain in a hair."
قيل لبني إسرائيل : ادخلوا الباب سجدًا وقولوا: حطة، فدخلوا يزحفون على أستاههم، فبدلوا وقالوا: حطة حبة في شعرةAnd [recall] when We said, "Enter this city

(58) And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens.' We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]." (59) But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.
