Scientific Interpretations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 9247 ):
Q3: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding the tafsirs called "scientific tafsirs"? And to what extent is it prescribed to link verses of the Qur'an to certain experimental scientific matters? There has been much debate around these issues.
A3: If they are of the type of interpretations that explain Allah's saying:
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thingأَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ
[Al-Anbya 21:30]
, by stating that the earth was connected to the sun and part of it, and due to the intensity of the sun's rotation, the earth separated from it, then its surface cooled while its interior remained hot, and it became one of the planets orbiting the sun. If the interpretations are of this type, one should not rely on them or place trust in them. Likewise, the interpretations in which their authors use Allah's saying:
And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of cloudsوَتَرَى الْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ
[An-Naml 27:88]
as evidence for the rotation of the earth, for these interpretations distort the words from their proper places and subject the Noble Qur'an to what they call scientific theories, whereas they are merely conjectures, illusions, and fantasies. And so are all interpretations that rely on new opinions that have no
basis in the Book and the Sunnah, nor in the speech of the Salaf of the Ummah; because of what they contain of speaking about Allah without knowledge. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
