Tafsir of Surat al-Ahzab

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 7517 ):
Q: We have a matter we want you to explain to us in the best possible way; for Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, says:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ
[An-Nahl 16:43]
, and that matter is: Allah says:
Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your menمَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ
[Al-Ahzab 33:40]
, to the end of the verse?

A: Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his tafsir of this verse: And His saying, the Exalted:
Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your menمَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ
[Al-Ahzab 33:40]
, is a prohibition against saying after this: Zayd is the son of Muhammad, meaning: he was not his father, even if he had adopted him, for he, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, did not have a male child who lived until puberty, for he, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, was born al-Qasim and al-Tayyib and al-Tahir from Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), and they died young, and he, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, was born Ibrahim from Maryam the Copt and he also died as an infant, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, had from Khadijah four daughters: Zaynab and Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum and Fatimah
(may Allah be pleased with them all), so three of them died during his lifetime, peace and blessings be upon him, and Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) outlived him until she was afflicted with his passing, peace and blessings be upon him, and then she died six months after him, and His saying, the Exalted:
but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.وَلَكِنْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا
[Al-Ahzab 33:40]
, is like His saying, the Glorious and Exalted:
Allah is most knowing of where He places His messageاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ يَجْعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُ
[Al-An'am 6:124]
, so this verse is explicit in that there is no prophet after him, and if there is no prophet after him, then there is certainly no messenger, a fortiori; for the station of messengership is more specific than the station of prophethood, since every messenger is a prophet but not vice versa, and the mass-transmitted hadiths from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from a group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) have come with this, and the Imam Ahmad said: Abu 'Amir al-Azdi narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad from 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil from al-Tufayl ibn Abi ibn Ka'b from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
My position among the prophets is like that of a man who built a house and perfected it and completed it, leaving only the space for one brick unfilled, so the people would go around the building and marvel at it, saying: If only the place of this brick were filled, then I am among the prophets in the position of that brickمثلي في النبيين كمثل رجل بنى دارًا فأحسنها وأكملها وترك فيها موضع لبنة لم يضعها، فجعل الناس يطوفون بالبنيان ويعجبون منه، ويقولون: لو تم موضع هذه اللبنة، فأنا في النبيين موضع تلك اللبنة
al-Tirmidhi narrated it from Bandr from Abu 'Amir al-'Uqdi with it, and he said: hasan sahih (good and authentic), and he mentioned after that several hadiths on the subject, and you can also
consult [the tafsir of Ibn Jarir and al-Qurtubi ] and the like if you wish to expand. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
