The first question of Fatwa number ( 8257 ):
Q1: I read [Tafsir al-Jalalayn] regarding verse (20), and its story ends in Surat Sad with verse (25), which narrates the story of our master Dawud when he was in the mihrab... etc., the story, which you certainly know. And what [Tafsir al-Jalalayn] said is that our master Dawud had ninety-nine wives, so he loved the wife of his companion and married her. I believe this is a Jewish fabrication. Of course, this is not the intended meaning of the verse, as it contains a test for our master Dawud and a trial of the extent of his precision in his judgment, for he listened to one person over the other, and this was his error, peace be upon him. I ask you to inform me clearly about this verse, and if what [Tafsir al-Jalalayn] says is wrong, why is there silence about it? May Allah reward you with all good.
A1: What many mufassirun mention regarding the story of Dawud (peace be upon him)
concerning his love for the wife of the army commander is not correct. The Shaykh al-Shanqiti (may Allah have mercy on him) indicated in [Udhu' al-Bayan] that what is mentioned regarding the Prophet of Allah Dawud (peace and blessings be upon him and our Prophet) that is not befitting his position, all of it goes back to Isra'iliyyat, so there is no trust in it and no reliance upon it. And what has been traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this, nothing of it is authentic. We advise you to refer to the book mentioned, [Udhu' al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Quran bi al-Quran], for it contains details about the topic. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
